In today's Scripture passage from Matthew chapter 2, it is written that King Herod, upon hearing the news of Jesus' birth, ordered the killing of all male children in Bethlehem under the age of two. Joseph, having been warned beforehand in a dream by the angel of the Lord, fled to Egypt and narrowly escaped the danger.
The birth of Christ was not a matter filled with joy for everyone. When King Herod died, news of his death reached Joseph in Egypt. Joseph planned to return from Egypt to his homeland of Judea, but upon learning that Judea was now under the rule of Archelaus, Herod the Great's son and successor, he changed course and went instead to Nazareth in Galilee, where he began to make his home.
What kind of place was Nazareth for Jesus? And why did Joseph choose Galilee, then considered a remote region, as their home? Today, we reflect on these questions as we ponder how the infant Jesus and his parents came to be known as “people of Nazareth.” Let us join together in offering this final worship service of the year, filled with anticipation for the new year and gratitude for the past twelve months.

Today's Scripture passage, John 1, begins with the profoundly striking statement, “In the beginning was the Word.” This ‘Word’ present at the dawn of creation can be directly equated with “Christ.” Consequently, New Testament scholars often discuss how the Gospel of John develops a “Logos Christology.” John did not seek to depict the life of Jesus Christ in his Gospel, but rather to portray who Jesus Christ is.
At the same time, this passage records John's understanding of the Christmas event. That is, Christmas is the event of God becoming human. What does it mean for God to become human? And why did God come into this world in human form? I want to hear that message.
As 2025 draws to a close, it may be said that globally, this year saw no resolution to our difficult challenges. Furthermore, it was a year in which the world suffered from natural disasters and the damage caused by global warming. We pray that the light of Christmas may shine upon the entire world.

Today's passage from the Bible records Mary's song, known as the 'Magnificat,' which is one of the greatest hymns in the Gospel. This hymn is similar to the 'Song of Hannah' in 1 Samuel 2:1-10. It sings of God's attention to the poor and humble, a theme already prevalent in the Old Testament. In a sense, the Magnificat (Mary's hymn) could be considered the world's first revolutionary document.
Here, three major 'revolutions' are described. They are: (1) God scattering the proud (a moral revolution), (2) God bringing down the powerful and lifting up the humble (a social revolution), and (3) filling the hungry with good things while sending the rich away empty-handed (an economic revolution).
The underlying thought in these descriptions is God's care and compassion for those who are socially and economically weak. God is the God of such vulnerable people. On the other hand, God strikes those who are proud before Him. Jesus Christ was born as a child of God in this way.

This morning as we enter the second week of Advent, the Scripture passage given during worship is Luke 1:26–38. Known as the “Annunciation,” it describes the moment when the young girl Mary, still in her engagement period, is told she will become the mother of Jesus, the Savior. This passage is a very well-known subject in European art, particularly in the field of painting.
Yet, in contrast to such a splendid world of paintings, one cannot help but feel pity for Mary when considering how much confusion and distress the Savior's announcement of her pregnancy—as described in the Bible—must have caused her before her marriage. For according to Jewish law, such a woman would be considered an adulteress and sentenced to death by stoning.
Behind the events of Christmas lay the decision and faith of one young woman who gave her entire being and life to obey the word revealed by the Lord. Nor must we forget the presence of Joseph, her husband, who fully supported Mary, accepting everything that happened to his engaged wife as the work of God. The Christmas story was a drama of faith.
