Today's Scripture passage is Colossians 3:12 and following. Colossae was a city located about 200 kilometers inland from the Greek Sea (Aegean Sea), situated along the major trade route leading eastward from Ephesus. Records indicate that in 61 AD, the nearby city of Laodicea was destroyed by an earthquake, and Colossae also suffered damage from this seismic event. After this, the name of the city of Colossae disappears from historical records.
Before receiving baptism, most of the believers in Colossae were Gentiles. Furthermore, because they lived within the Greek cultural sphere, this letter reveals that the faith of the church members was being threatened by “the empty deceit of philosophy” (2:8). To these Gentile believers, Paul exhorts them to put on the virtues of a Christian. Above all, he urges them to put on love.
Paul was imprisoned in Ephesus at this time. From there, he entrusted the mission to the Colossians to his disciple Epaphras, heard about the church's situation from Epaphras, and wrote a letter to them. He listened to the words of exhortation.

Jesus visited the town of Capernaum on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and entered a house. Word spread that he was there, and a large crowd gathered, filling the area around the door so tightly that there was no room left. As Jesus began to speak to the crowd, four men arrived carrying a paralytic. But the crowd prevented them from getting inside.
They climbed onto the roof, removed the tiles around the spot where Jesus was standing, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat. So it is written in today's Gospel of Mark. Knowing they couldn't approach horizontally, the four men changed their approach, lowering the sick man vertically to seek healing from Jesus.
Jesus, seeing their faith, declared, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Who were “those people”? And which is easier: declaring forgiveness of sins, or declaring healing from sickness by saying, “Get up, take your mat, and walk”? Today, let us focus on this and listen to the Word.

The new year, 2026, has begun. Happy New Year. May your journey throughout this year be filled with gratitude and joy, under God's protection, and may it be a peaceful year.
On the Sunday morning worship service at the start of the new year, the Scripture passage given was Psalm 119:105 and following. Here appears the very well-known verse: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In our life's journey, we often face moments when we must choose which path to take, whether to go right or left. It is in such times of life's crisis—when faced with a critical choice—that God's word exerts its power. That is, the Christian who trusts in God can overcome life's great crises without fear, with the conviction that “this is the path God is telling me to take.” “Your statutes are my delight forever,” the psalmist confesses in verse 111. “Statutes” refers to the law God gave to the people of Israel. Believing that the commandments of this law serve as a compass for life, the psalmist trusts he can navigate the stormy seas of existence. This morning, we savor those words.

In today's Scripture passage from Matthew chapter 2, it is written that King Herod, upon hearing the news of Jesus' birth, ordered the killing of all male children in Bethlehem under the age of two. Joseph, having been warned beforehand in a dream by the angel of the Lord, fled to Egypt and narrowly escaped the danger.
The birth of Christ was not a matter filled with joy for everyone. When King Herod died, news of his death reached Joseph in Egypt. Joseph planned to return from Egypt to his homeland of Judea, but upon learning that Judea was now under the rule of Archelaus, Herod the Great's son and successor, he changed course and went instead to Nazareth in Galilee, where he began to make his home.
What kind of place was Nazareth for Jesus? And why did Joseph choose Galilee, then considered a remote region, as their home? Today, we reflect on these questions as we ponder how the infant Jesus and his parents came to be known as “people of Nazareth.” Let us join together in offering this final worship service of the year, filled with anticipation for the new year and gratitude for the past twelve months.
