主イエスが、子ロバに乗ってエルサレムに入場したのは日曜日のことでした。ヨハネ福音書12章によると、この時、大勢の群衆が、なつめやしの枝を持ってイエスを迎えたと記されます。このことから、受難週が始まる日曜日は「棕櫚の日曜日」(Palm Sunday；英）と呼ばれるようになりました。
 しかし、その1週間はイエスとその弟子たちにとって、まさに嵐のような時でした。人々は歓呼してイエスを迎えたはずなのに、その週の金曜日には彼らの主は十字架につけられることになったのです。
 本日の場面では、ゴルゴタの丘に三本の十字架が立てられ、そこにイエスのほかにもう二人の犯罪人が十字架につけられる場面が描かれています。ひとりは右に、もう一人は左につけられました。そのうちの一人は、激しくイエスをののしりました。しかし、もう一人の犯罪人は、イエスに対して、御国が来た時には、どうか自分のことを思い出してほしいと懇願するのです。
 棕櫚の日曜日の本日は、この箇所から響いてくる聖書のメッセージに、耳を傾けたいと思います。

  It was Sunday when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. According to John chapter 12, at this time a large crowd greeted Jesus with palm branches. For this reason, the Sunday on which Passion Week begins is called Palm Sunday.
  But that week was truly a stormy time for Jesus and his disciples. The people would have welcomed Jesus with cheers, but that Friday their Lord was to be crucified.
  In today's scene, three crosses are erected on the hill of Golgotha, and Jesus and 2 other criminals are crucified there. One was on the right and the other on the left. One of them cursed Jesus. But another criminal begged Jesus to remember him when the kingdom comes.
  Today as Palm Sunday, let's listen to the message of the Bible that resonates from this passage.
