週報巻頭言「迷い出た羊」
本日の「迷い出た羊」のたとえ話は主イエスが語られた譬え話でも一番短いものの一つです。ユダヤでは、羊がよく迷いましたが、それには理由がありました。パレスチナはその中央を丘陵地帯が縦走していますが、その幅はわずか３〜5キロで、牧草はそこにまばらに生えているだけであり、牧場を仕切る柵や擁壁はありませんでした。ゆえに、羊たちはしばしば迷い出てしまい、両側の峡谷に落ち込むことがあったのです。そうなると、俊敏でない羊は身動きが取れなくなり、そのまま死んでしまうことも少なくありませんでした。
そのような迷い得た羊を探し出す仕事を担ったのが羊飼いでした。イエスの時代のパレスチナでは、通常、羊は個人のものではなく村全体の所有物だったため羊飼いは一人でなく、二人または三人が共同で見張り役をつとめました。そのため、九十九匹の羊を残して、迷い出た一匹の羊を探し求める働きを担う羊飼いを立てることができたのです。本日の聖書は、イエスがそのような迷い出た羊を探し求めるよき羊飼いであることを示しています。

Today's Summary "the Wandering Sheep" by Rev. Kazu Kimura
Today's parable of “the Wandering Sheep” is one of the shortest parables told by the Lord Jesus. In Judea, sheep often strayed, and there was a reason for this. Palestine is traversed by a central ridge of hills, only 3 to 5 kilometers wide, where sparse grass grew. There were no fences or retaining walls to enclose the farms. Consequently, sheep often strayed and fell into the valleys on either side. Once there, slower sheep often became trapped and unable to move, frequently perishing.
The shepherd was the one tasked with finding such wandering sheep. In Palestine during Jesus' time, sheep were typically not privately owned but belonged to the entire village. Therefore, shepherds did not work alone; two or three would share the duty of watchfulness. This allowed them to appoint one shepherd to leave the ninety-nine sheep and go in search of the one that had gone out. Today's Scripture passage shows that Jesus is that good shepherd who seeks out the wandering sheep.
